USS TAYLOR, At Sea – Nine military veterans and one merchant mariner were laid to rest during a burial at sea ceremony held by the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50) Oct. 22, 2014.
“It is a privilege to honor the prior service, lives and families of our former Sailors, Soldiers and Merchant Mariners as we carry out their final wishes and lay them to rest at sea today,” said Cmdr. Murz Morris, Taylor’s commanding officer.
Taylor committed the cremains of eight Sailors, one Soldier and one Merchant Mariner to the sea with full military honors under the direction of Cmdr. Joel Rodriguez, executive officer and Lt. Steven Cloer, command chaplain.
After individual recognition by Cloer, the deceased were committed to the sea and honored with a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
The families of those honored will be presented with a letter from Morris, a chart listing the latitude and longitude of where the remains were committed to the sea, expended casings from the 21-gun salute and photos of the ceremony.
Burials at sea are a long-standing naval tradition dating back to the ancient Greeks. Today, burials at sea are performed for military members, civilian Military Sealift Command personnel and their dependent family members.
Taylor recently returned from a seven-month deployment to the 4th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility and is scheduled to decommission in May 2015.
