PHILADELPHIA – The Marine Corps Recruiting Command participated in the fourth annual Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers conference Oct. 16-19, 2014, in Philadelphia. SASE was founded in November 2007 to help science and engineering students of Asian heritage achieve excellence.
During this event, collegiate students were educated about the importance of leadership and strong work ethic.
“The leadership focus is important because a lot of companies are telling us that [leadership] is what they lack,” said Capt. James Evensen, assistant diversity officer for Marine Corps Recruiting Command. “If we can motivate these students to come outside their box, that benefits them.”
Marine Corps officers taught conference attendees about Marine Corps values, ethics and leadership traits.
“In chaotic situations, leadership is probably one of the most important skills someone can have,” said Omer Bakshi, a SASE member and Clarkston University student. “I feel like the Marine Corps has to be here because what better way to learn leadership than by America’s finest.”
SASE teaches students nontechnical skills that could benefit them in the work force.
“Beyond the technical skills they learn in their college courses, they also have to stand up and present, organize, learn about financing, engage, sell, and influence,” said Khanh Vu, executive director of SASE. “All those things they need to learn to be successful after graduating college.”
SASE is scheduled to hold their next national conference in Houston Oct. 8-10, 2015.
