    4th Sustainment Brigade

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, AFGHANISTAN – Gunslingers from the 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Resolute Support Sustainment Brigade had the privilege of attending a Reach Back-Pull Forward professional development event at Kandahar Airfield, Oct. 11, 2014.

Command Sgt. Maj. Edward A. Bell, the 1st Theater Sustainment Command (Afghanistan), 3rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), command sergeant major, spoke to Soldiers about how to develop their careers and prepare for their futures.

“It is important to teach noncommissioned officers how to better themselves because at some point the command sergeants major will have to leave, and then it will fall upon them to lead the Army,” said Bell.

The RBPF mentorship program is designed for senior leaders to guide lower enlisted and noncommissioned officers on how to progress in their military careers and help bring to light important tools on how to become better leaders for the Army.

Bell visited the Gunslinger Soldiers at their battalion headquarters and told them how to help each other accomplish tasks and explained the importance of being there for one another during hard times. He said that they are all a big part of the team and that they need each other to complete their missions.

“As you take this journey never forget about your teammates…this is what makes this Army great and on your worst day or your battle buddies worst day, pick them up and help each other get the mission done,” said Bell.

Bell also told Soldiers how to become successful and how to take ownership of their careers, stating the importance of getting an education and removing all the excuses out of their lives.

“If you have a laptop you can find the time to pursue your education. It takes discipline to get what you want and that is what our Army is, disciplined,” said Bell.

Pvt. Rodney S. Dredden, a signal support systems specialist with the Gunslingers, attended the briefing and said that it was very beneficial to him.

“It was cool having a leader take the time to talk to us lower enlisted and give us a blue print on how to succeed. I have only been in for about a year and don’t really know what it takes to reach the top, so it was really beneficial for me to know what kind of leader I want to be,” said Dredden, a Vineland, New Jersey, native.
Bell continued the mentorship for the noncommissioned officers at the community events center and explained ways to safeguard and advance their careers.

At the end of the event, Bell presented excellence coins to several Gunslinger Soldiers for their exemplary performance throughout their deployment.

“I learned a lot, but it doesn’t mean anything if I don’t apply it; that’s what I plan to do and this briefing will definitely help me mold myself into the leader I want to be,” said Dredden.
