MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Autumn brings a cool breeze, changing leaves and the start of the holiday season. People gather to celebrate events such as the Marine Corps birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah and the New Year.

During these months, everyone is advised to be more aware of their surroundings and activities. Festivals and celebrations are common targets for those trying to take advantage of others, because the holidays tend to bring large groups of people together.

“The holidays are an important timeframe for more situational awareness,” said Steve Simmons base antiterrorism officer with Mission Assurance Branch, Operations and Training, MCB Camp Lejeune. “We want to increase concern for activities and surroundings.”

Some precautions that people can take during the holiday season include pre-designating meeting areas and contingency plans for special events and trips. Keep a watchful eye, establish a baseline and take note of suspicious activity or anything out of the ordinary.

“Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activity,” said Shane Ankney, anti-terrorism program manager at the mission assurance office and Holgate, Ohio native. “Marines can report activity to their chain of command, the command anti-terrorism officer representative, military police, local police or file an anonymous report through the Eagle Eyes website.”

Anyone on or around the base can report suspicious activity which ultimately increases the safety and security aboard base.

“Our security is increased when more people are vigilant,” said Ankney. “Be on the lookout for anything out of place or suspicious such as people watching, recording or noting sensitive areas or requests for information through social media.”

If you witnesses suspicious activity you can report it to www.usmceagleeyes.org or call 451-3333.
