YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan service members and civilians honored the contributions of Hispanic Americans during the a special heritage month observance event, Sept. 18.

Individuals from all military branches commemorated the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

“We have these observances to make Soldiers aware of the different cultures that contribute to the success of the country as a whole,” said 1st Sgt. Carlos Gomez, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, USAG-Yongsan.

Gomez, 41, from Killeen, Texas, said although it may be not commonly understood, immigrants founded the U.S. and make up a large part of the armed forces. The many different cultures blended together are what he cites as a benefit to being American and a Soldier today.

“As Americans, we see a multitude of cultures within our country,” Gomez said. “As U.S. service members, we assist and interact with numerous different cultures across the globe. Our diversity in the military allows us to better understand other cultures.”

During the observance, attendees listened to a brief history of Hispanic service within the military, and the impact of the culture in the development of the U.S.

A Hispanic-American military spouse shared her personal story of struggle and success.

“Don’t ever give up on anything,” said Guadalupe Villarreal. “You can do whatever you want, as long as you don’t give up. It’s what we have learned, my husband and I, through our time as a Hispanic family in the Army.”

The attendees enjoyed a variety of authentic Llatin cuisine, representing a mixture of the many cultures that call America home.
