ATHENS, Ohio - The quarterback for the Athens High School football team, Joe Burrow, was officially recognized as being selected to play for the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis All American Bowl during a jersey presentation ceremony Sept. 27.

During the ceremony, which took place at the football stadium prior to the Athens vs Vinton County game, Burrow was presented with his SFAAB hat, jersey and shirt by Sgt. David Wood, the local Marine Corps recruiter for the Athens, Ohio, area.

The Semper Fidelis Bowl is an annual football game hosted by the Marine Corps that involves approximately 90 high school student athletes who are chosen based on their athletic and scholastic achievements as well as their own personal character. Based on geographic region, players represent East Coast and West Coast teams and will compete against each other in the bowl, which will be held in Carson, California, Jan. 4, 2015.

Burrow, a 6-foot-4, 205-pounder, is ranked as the No. 24 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com and is the highest rated Quarterback in Ohio. He has a 4.3 weighted cumulative GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and also spends his free time volunteering as a Youth Sports Camp Counselor. He is currently committed to playing college football for Ohio State University.

Coach Ryan Adams, who is the head coach for the football team, said Burrows is a good fit to play in the Semper Fidelis Bowl.

“I think he fits this to a T,” said Adams. “Joe has such great discipline and he is always the first guy there and the last one to leave. You tell him to do something once and he just does it. He takes cares of his academics and is dedicated in the weight room. He exudes many of the qualities you would find in Marines.”

Burrow, who has an uncle in the Marine Corps, said he looks forward to representing the Marine Corps in the upcoming bowl, as well as an opportunity to test his athletic skills.

“This is a huge honor,” said Burrow. “I’m proud to represent what the Marine Corps stands for, and I’m excited to get some national exposure and a chance to play some high level football with some of the best football players in the country.”

Wood, who presented Burrow his jersey, was in agreement that Burrow was a good pick for the bowl.

“He was picked to represent the Corps because he personifies what we value as Marines. He will be a good addition to the Marine Corps East Team.”
