JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Marine Corps Air Station New River will be conducting a full-scale exercise, Vigilant Response 2014, Oct. 7-8, which will simulate a pandemic smallpox outbreak.
Roughly 1,500 personnel from Marine Corps Air Station New River, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, and the Onslow County Department of Public Health and Emergency Services will be participating in the exercise and evaluated on their ability to respond to the simulated pandemic outbreak.
The exercise is the pinnacle of more than nine months of planning and will validate the Air Station’s Emergency Management plan and the Naval Hospital’s Emergency Operations plan. Lessons learned from this exercise will be utilized for future county-wide and regional exercises.
This is one of the first local exercises to administer inoculations during the scenario. NHCL medical personnel will be on-hand to administer the flu shot or flu mist to roughly 1,200 service members throughout the exercise. This will allow for a more accurate simulation of how medical personnel would actually screen patients and administer vaccinations and allow for the Air Station to work through continuity of operations in the event of a pandemic outbreak.
