JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune students have the power to help law enforcement catch criminals at their fingertips. Sending information that could help lead to criminals being placed behind bars is as easy as easy as sending a text message through Crime Stoppers newest avenue, Text-A-Tip.

Crime Stoppers is a partnership with area law enforcement including Jacksonville, Onslow, MCB Camp Lejeune, and Marine Corps Air Station New River. Crime Stoppers works to help solve crimes. With Crime Stoppers, you never have to reveal your identity and Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest.

The Text-A-Tip program allows Lejeune students to text in information, whether to report a crime, suspicious activity, or information to a previous crime. The platform also allows for the user to submit photos, a feature not previously possible when citizens called anonymously in the past.

According to www.jacksonvillenc.gov, the prevention of crime goes hand-and-hand with reporting suspicious activities. Jacksonville Police offer briefings aboard Camp Lejeune, Camp Johnson, Marine Corps Base Camp Geiger, and MCAS New River. Crime prevention for the military addresses topics relevant military personnel and their families that may be new to the area. Specifics topics like street con games, high crime areas, and local ordinances pertaining to drugs and prostitution are addressed.

The Crime Stoppers program was set in motion in December 2000 when the Marine Corps Base and Marine Corps Air Station, along with their Department of Defense schools, accepted partnership with Crime Stoppers. The end result is a unified program now capable of receiving and processing tips and information on crimes anywhere in the Onslow County area including all municipalities, schools, and the Marine Corps installations.

The Campus program mirrors that of the adult program with the exception that it is featured as an augment to the County wide “Safe Schools” project, and that students can also
receive assistance regarding the program from their individual school resource officers.

“The Crime Stoppers program was introduced to MCB/MCAS and base schools, almost at the inception of the program in the year 2000,” said Joe Yannessa, the chairman of the Jacksonville Onslow County Crime Stoppers. “We work closely with the school resource officers by providing Crime Stoppers promotional items such as water bottles, pens, pencils, highlighters and rulers for the school resource officers to hand out during the school year.

To Text-A-Tip, one must only to 274637 (CRIMES). When texting, type TIP4CSJAX before your message. The tipster will receive a code number for follow up and their possible reward.

"The primary goal of the Campus Crime Stoppers is to deter Criminal activity in the schools by making all students aware that criminal activity could be observed by other students,” said Yannessa. “These students might be willing to report that activity by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline. Over the past 14 years, Crime Stoppers has awarded numerous students for reporting various crimes, including: weapons, drugs, stolen property, assaults and destruction of school property.”
