RIGA, Latvia - Michigan Army National Guard Soldiers from the 177th Military Police Brigade, Taylor, Michigan, tried their hand at firing Latvian army weapons at the Latvian National Military Academy in Riga, Latvia, in preparation for Operation Silver Arrow, which begins in Latvia in October.
Silver Arrow is a Latvian-led, multinational training exercise in early October, operated in cooperation with United States Army Europe’s Operation Atlantic Resolve.
Soldiers were firing the MP5A1, a compact submachine gun and the “workhorse” of the Latvian army.
For the exercise, the weapons were fitted with a conversion kit, which allows the weapons to fire simulated ammunition, similar to paintball rounds.
The overall goal of the weapons’ familiarization firing and the Silver Arrow exercise in general is greater interoperability between the nations’ militaries.
“When push comes to shove, if we’re downrange on any operations, whether they’re NATO or a hostile environment, I think we should be able to count on each other to be able to work together,” said Staff Sgt. Dan Hopkins, 1776th Military Police Company, Taylor, Michigan.
Hopkins participated in the firing and added that though he still prefers the U.S. Army’s M4 carbine and the MP5A1 was a little small for him, he still liked the weapon.
The Michigan Army National Guard Soldiers will return to Michigan in early October after their three-week joint training has finished.
