YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – The Yongsan Army Community Services welcomed newcomers to the Yongsan community with a bus trip to one of the greatest tourist attractions of South Korea, July 22.

The annual event hosted by the ACS, and coordinated through the Community Relations Office, took the day-trippers out of Seoul. After a two-hour long journey to Pocheon, the group arrived at their first destination, Sansawon. As one of the most famous Korean Traditional Wine Galleries, Sansawon allowed the soldiers and their family an opportunity to observe how traditional Korean liquors are made. The newcomers were also given a chance to taste all the great liquors produced by Sansawon.

After a gratifying hour at the wine gallery, the group was then led to the main attraction of the tour, the Pocheon Art Valley. Before their tour at the art valley, the crew took a moment to enjoy a traditional Korean lunch featuring Bulgogi, and mushroom stew. After lunch, the group was led inside to the area, which has long been famous for its granite sculptures and creative activity programs. The program ACS has prepared for the group was making a stone soap.

“I really enjoyed the making of the soap. It was very interesting because it seemed very natural. It made me feel much closer to nature,” said Sheldon L. Fan Sr., a participant of the program. “Also it was very relaxing, due to the aroma of the granite soap,” “

The final destination of the tour was the sculpture park and the Cheonjuho Lake, the most famous tourist attraction of the art valley. The area, which the participants had to take a monorail to, was without doubt the highlight of the day’s tour. The special tour offered newcomers a unique experience with their family and friends.

“If anybody’s interested in taking any of our tours, or something like that, make sure that they contact the ACS to find out any of the tours,” said Ms. Marilyn Rosebourough of ACS. “We do the Korean Language class, the English as a Second Language class, and we do the newcomers’ tour. This is the newcomers’ tour. That’s what I want everybody to know. And it’s all fun.”
