MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The 2014 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Combined Federal Campaign kicked off Sept. 19 with the annual tug of war matchup.
Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 took the CFC Cup during the double elimination tournament at the Roadhouse, going undefeated against five other Cherry Point and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing teams.
“I don’t know why they didn’t have our names engraved on the trophy already,” said Cpl. James Carver, an engineer equipment operator with MWSS-271. “We had the biggest and most solid team.”
According to Carver, Headquarter and Headquarters Squadron’s Installation Personnel Administration Center team put up the biggest challenge, but ultimately fell short against the MWSS-271 Marines’ superior strength.
“We will not lose,” said Carver, a native of Clayton, Ga. “I personally will not be back next year to defend our title, but the other teams should look out because we have already begun the process of preparing our junior Marines to guard this glorious title.”
The CFC Cup is the annual kick-off event of Cherry Point’s CFC drive.
The drive gives federal employees, including military members, an easy opportunity to make donations to eligible non-profit organizations. The drive includes more than 2,400 national and international charities and 25,000 local charities. Listed charities cover a wide range of focus, from medical research to supporting wounded warriors.
“This campaign is the only authorized solicitation within the Department of Defense, other than the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive, that helps raise money for charity,” said Bobbie Whitbeck, a CFC coordinator and human resources specialist with the air station’s Civilian Manpower Office. “The goal is to have 100 percent contact with each military member and government employee at the air station.”
Over the next three months, personnel at Cherry Point will have the opportunity to donate to charities of their choice. While participation is not mandatory, the purpose is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to donate.
“Each unit has a CFC representative who notifies the Marines and Sailors about the CFC, how it works and the different charities they are able to donate to,” said Whitbeck.
The CFC Cup is the kick start to build awareness for the new CFC season, according to Wayne Snell, a CFC coordinator and human resources specialist with Civilian Manpower Office.
“The event is a reminder for everyone that the CFC is upon us once again,” said Snell.
