RANIKHET CANTONMENT, Uttarakhand, India – Staff members from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division and the Indian Army are working together during this years’ Yudh Abhyas bilateral exercise sponsored by U.S. Army Pacific.
The staff members from each unit and nation are working together as part of a simulated United Nations mission force, tasked with conducting peace keeping operations.
A five-person team from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School’s Center for Civil-Military Relations led a week of classes for the combined Indian and U.S. staff at Ranikhet, cantonment as the first phase of Yudh Abhyas 2014.
The week of classes were focused on the dynamics of UN peacekeeping operations as well as providing insight into the structure of UN mission forces.
“This is my first experience with a UN peacekeeping operation,” said U.S. Maj. Anthony Minderman, the logistics officer for the 1/25 SBCT from Cincinnati, Ohio. “The classes this week helped to enlighten me as to how the UN is structured and how they operate. The classes also informed me of who all the players are in a peace keeping operation.”
The training exercise is expected to last through the month and also consists of a combined field training exercise with U.S. Soldiers from the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment and Indian Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Gurkha Rifles.
This is the 10th year the Yudh Abhyas exercise has taken place. The exercise has provided combined U.S. and Indian Army training and promoted positive U.S. and India military-to-military relations since its inception in 2004. This year’s training events include coordination and cooperation training and situational training exercises.
The intent of bilateral training is to improve the ability of all forces involved to respond to a wide range of contingencies related to United Nations missions.
