Under a sky of soft blue, in sunny spring-like weather the members of the 470th Air Base Squadron (ABS) participated in a morale-boosting Squadron Sports Day at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany.

The event began with a camaraderie run in formation complete with various cadence calls. The run fostered a sense of togetherness and got the day off on the (your left…your left) right foot!

"During the squadron run, we were all in the same step, on the same path and going to the same place, so our camaraderie naturally shines through," said Tech. Sgt. Christian Navarro, the event coordinator.

Members from the entire unit took part in various sporting events. “The goal of our Squadron Sports Day is to get everyone out of the office, enjoying themselves and to build relationships that ultimately help us better perform the mission," said Navarro.

The rest of the day was filled with basketball, volleyball, racquetball, ultimate Frisbee, football and kickball. After the sporting events, the group gathered for a Bar-B-Que. After the participants had their fill of hamburgers and hot dogs, it was time for dessert – pie in the face that is. The booster club had a very fun and successful fundraising event with the pie in the face contest.

The Squadron Sports Day concluded with a coin design contest. The squadron members voted on their favorite design and the winning entry went to Ed Carter, 470th ABS community readiness consultant.

Lt. Col. Brady Vaira, 470th ABS commander said, “our overall goal was to enhance squadron morale with sporting events in a competitive, yet fun-focused environment. We had a wonderful day filled with esprit de corps, friendly competition, and at the end of the day, the Mighty Bison had a chance to get to know each other a little bit better.”

The mission of the 470th ABS is to support NATO, the Department of Defense and family members while providing combat-ready Airmen to the nation's fight. The 470 ABS meets their mission, as a National Support Unit, with approximately 170 active duty, civilians, and local nationals from 36 different core Air Force specialties.
