HORSHAM AIR GUARD STATION, Pa. – The 111th Attack Wing hosted this year’s Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s Flight of Freedom ceremony on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m., inducting two retired guard members into the Pennsylvania Air National Guard Hall of Fame and recognizing an area World War II veteran.
Since 1988, the annual event has been held at one of the three Pennsylvania-based Air National Guard units. This year’s event will welcome retired Brig. Gen. William Boardley, 171st Air Refuel Wing in Pittsburgh, and retired Chief Master Sgt. Domenick Fiore, Jr., 193rd Special Operations Wing in Harrisburg, into the state’s hall of fame.
Induction into the PANG Hall of Fame is considered the highest honor conferred upon an individual for their contributions to the Pa. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs or the Pa. National Guard.
Boardley and Fiore will join the elite the 54-member group currently honored.
Additionally, during the ceremony the wing will present military decorations to the Abington, Pennsylvania, family of deceased World War II Army Air Corps veteran, Cpl. Ernest Lewis.
Lewis, volunteered for military service as a fighter aircraft armorer serving from 1942 – 1946 and was stationed on Tinian Island in the Pacific in 1945.
“We are very proud of my father’s service,” said daughter, Beth Ann Lewis. “He didn’t feel that his contributions warranted recognition, so he never pursued receiving his decorations.”
