CORONADO, Calif. – Naval Base Coronado’s (NBC) Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Galley and Naval Air Station North Island (NASIN) Galley received Five-Star Excellence Awards, the highest rating, for food service.

“Meal preparation and serving is like chemistry. The number of diverse Sailors, teams and groups we feed every day is an art of science: ordering, food preparation and presentation, rationing, planning and managing times are a few of our responsibilities. There are so many elements to a meal service,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Michael Lacson, NAB Galley leading petty officer.

Capt. Sund, NBC commanding officer, recognized the NAB and NASNI galleys for their excellence Sept. 2 and Sept. 4, respectively. The NAB galley has received the five-star accreditation for five consecutive years; the NASNI galley received its first five-star rating since its grand opening last year.

“No two days are alike. The real reward comes from satisfied customers and training motivated culinary specialists. It really is an exhilarating experience every time we successfully create a meal,” said Chief Warrant Officer Limon Arnulfo, NBC Galley food service officer.

The five-star accreditation is the first step to winning the Capt. Edward F. Ney Memorial Award, established by the Secretary of the Navy and International Food Service Executives Association in 1958. This annual award encourages excellence in Navy food service programs with the objective on improving the quality life for Navy personnel.

The IFSEA, a proud partner of the U.S. Military for more than 50 years, strives to enhance the careers of its members through food service certification, education seminars, networking, student mentorships and community service.
