PEARL HARBOR – Yeoman 1st Class Latoya Calvin, an Akron, Ohio, native, received the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Inspirational Leadership Award on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Sept. 13.
The Honolulu-Hawaii chapter of NAACP held a Military Leader Awards luncheon at the Hickam Officer’s Club. Calvin was among 14 recipients to receive an award honoring their commitment, leadership and community service.
“The committee ranks the nominees on how well their careers reflect superb leadership, outstanding community service, and effective engagement of NAACP objectives,” said Alphonso Braggs, president of the Honolulu-Hawaii chapter of NAACP. “It is a tremendous honor for our organization to acknowledge the hard work of uniformed personnel.”
Adm. Harry Harris Jr., commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT), commended the awardees and NAACP’s heritage.
“I’d like to extend my congratulations to all of the awardees. Recognizing you, we also celebrate the legacy of what this event means,” said Harris. “Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the NAACP has done incredible things to advance the cause of civil rights. And I’m really proud that this organization is recognizing those in uniform for what we collectively do to advance the cause.”
Assigned to PACFLT, Calvin works in the Intelligence and Information Operations directorate and is administratively responsible for 170 active duty and reservist Sailors. She volunteers countless hours to community events and was excited to win the award.
“I am extremely proud and humbled by this nomination and selection,” Calvin said. “This is a life-changing experience and a moment I will remember forever.”
Since joining the Navy in August 2001, Calvin has excelled as a representative of the Navy, United States and her local community.
“I would tell any service member that in order to be an inspirational leader, you have to have passion, purpose and meaning,” Calvin said. “An inspirational leader feels passionately about the vision and mission. Leaders have to sometimes connect the dots of the big picture; once you obtain the ability to do so, you will be that example and inspiration. You will inspire, motivate, and lead by example and set the tone. “
In addition to her core duties, Calvin’s various contributions to the command also include being the Command Drug and Alcohol Program advisor, assistant command fitness leader and volunteer coordinator.
“YN1 Calvin's work ethic, rating expertise and unwavering support of the chain of command have made her an invaluable asset,” said Master Chief Intelligence Specialist Mathew Rodriguez. “She has improved morale and promoted teamwork and mission accomplishment across the command.”
Calvin, along with two other Sailors, Chief Warrant Officer Vanderla L. Akaka and Petty Officer 1st Class Brenda L. Flores from Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, were also recognized at the annual ceremony hosted by the NAACP Honolulu chapter that covers Hawaii, Korea, Guam, and Japan.
