JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The annual Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Doggie Dip was the final scheduled outdoor activity at the Fort Myer Officers Club pool complex, and despite some morning heat and humidity, another bumper crop of kids, owners and dogs got in the last splashes and dives of the 2014 summer.

According to Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Todd Hopkins, 52 dogs registered to be in line for two hours of canine cannonballs and general four-legged frolicking the morning of Sept. 6.

Thirty-four dogs were already wet by the end of the first hour of swimming, such as Blue, the proclaimed king of the baby pool, and 8-year-old rescue Bentley, who owned a mean, around-the-perimeter dog paddle.

“I’ll just walk around the pool,” said the owner of Bentley and Lucca, Crystal Smittkamp. “They just do the laps.”

What is becoming an end-of-summer tradition, the O Club pools open exclusively for canines and their families the weekend after Labor Day. This year, Hopkins counted the third-highest attendance of any Fort Myer Doggie Dip.

In 2012, 86 dogs took part in the Doggie Dip while last year, 68 family pets lounged and soaked up the sun on the O Club patio.

The event also attracted many of the human element, who ranged from new Officers Club members and families new to the Military District of Washington to the old-pro retirees who sat pool-side and enjoyed the free entertainment.

“We hope to be back throughout the years for the Doggie Dip,” members of the Corbett family said while their 8-year-old Boxer named Moxie searched and destroyed a waterlogged tennis ball.

On Sept. 5, 10 dogs and 21 people attended Cpl. Douglas A. Zembiec Pool’s “Pups in the Pool” held on the Henderson Hall portion of JBM-HH.

The tentative Fort Myer Officers Club pool complex 2015 opening day is Saturday, May 23.
