    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce honored Cpl. Joshua Young as the Service Person of the Quarter during a luncheon at Floyd’s 1921 Restaurant in Morehead City, N.C., Sept. 5.

Young is an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Specialist with a detachment of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, N.C. Young works up to 120 hours per week training Marines, maintaining the daily log of all ARFF operations and ensuring his entire section is up-to-date with training.

He is currently serving as the dispatch noncommissioned officer at the detachment and still finds several hours in his free time to volunteer with various organizations in Havelock and surrounding communities.

The Berne, Ind. native has served as a role model to the Marines in his charge and the community members around him since he enlisted in 2012, according to Sgt. Kyle Anthony, section leader
    with MWSS-271 air operations.

“During his tour in Afghanistan, Young volunteered more than 295 hours at the Camp Leatherneck USO,” said Anthony. “He had a profound effect on the morale of the service members by keeping the phone lines and internet in working condition and ensuring service members could keep in contact with their loved ones.”
Young has volunteered more than 46 hours to River Point Crest in New Bern, N.C., and Somerset Court of Newport in Newport, N.C. During his visits to these community homes, Young entertains the residents by playing the piano and accordion.

“Cpl. Young is an exemplary NCO and has the drive to ensure he and his Marines are safe and successful,” said Anthony.
Young has volunteered more than 300 hours as a volunteer firefighter at the Western Carteret Fire Department, Cedar Point, N.C., and also volunteers with the Newport Fire Company.

“I volunteer for the satisfaction of knowing I helped someone and promoted a good relationship between the military and the community,” said Young.

Young credits his senior leadership for his good work ethic and helpful nature.

“I have seen how my leadership operates and I want to emulate those traits for the Marines under my charge,” said Young. “Being able to help people is why I do what I do.”

Young plans to continue volunteering in as many ways as he can to benefit the people and the communities around him.
