NAF MISAWA, Japan - Sailors stationed at Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa’s Security Detachment participated in Citadel Pacific 2014 (CP 14) from Aug. 25-28.

This annual exercise provided advanced security technique training designed to increase the skills and experience required to respond to threats to Navy installations and units.

NAF Misawa’s security personnel were graded on unauthorized surveillance suspect detainment, active shooter engagement, vehicle-born improvised explosive devise search, and suicide bomber at the entry control point security threat scenarios during the exercise.

NAF’s Sailors engaged suspects played by role players who made each scenario very realistic by being argumentative, defiant, aggressive, and violent.

CP 14 exposed Sailors to the tactical aspects of security that are not normally experienced during static fixed post and roving security watches.

“It’s definitely a rare opportunity to get to participate in this type of training compared to other watches I stand or learning about how to handle these situations in a classroom,” said Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Justin Calhoun, from Clovis, Calif.

Day to day routine for many security force members consists of vehicle patrols, security dispatch center watch, and classroom training.

“These training scenarios instill solid security tactics in our security forces which enable them to react correctly during real world situations,” said Chief Hull Technician Bryan Abbot, from Macomb, Ill., NAF Misawa’s Training Officer.

Military installations have an increased susceptibility to security threats without real world security training scenarios provided by exercises such as CP 14.

Each scenario was graded and critiqued on proper protocol and situational awareness.
