MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE BARSTOW, Calif., - Marines and civilians aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., conducted a tour of the base for ordnance officers and staff noncommissioned officers with 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Calif., Aug. 26, 2014.

The trip was designed to educate Marines in the operating forces on what depot level maintenance does to support them. For FSD the tour was an opportunity to network directly with the Marines they exchange equipment with on a daily basis.

The tour started with a brief on MCLB Barstow, explaining its history and the capabilities it provides the Marine Corps.

Lieutenant Col. Gregory Field, director of Fleet Support Division Barstow, explained that seeing the maintenance process with Production Plant Barstow gives maintenance officers and chiefs a better idea of what to expect when they receive that equipment back.

“Many Marines can go their entire career without ever understanding what [FSD and PPB] provide to their organization,” Field said. “All these officers and SNCOs that were up here are the ones that are working to get equipment and send equipment to us. For them to be able to see the entire process they don’t normally see is a great education opportunity for them.”

To accomplish this, the Marines were given a tour of PPB where they saw exactly how the weapons systems they use were broken down, repaired, and rebuilt.

“The Marines that came here are all the subject matter experts tied to these platforms,” said Maj. Keith J. Luzbetak, the 1st Marine Division ordnance officer. “It’s important for them to be able to see what [PPB] does at its level to see how it impacts them in the operating forces.”

It’s important for the operating forces to forge connections with the supporting establishments so the two can better work with each other, Luzbetak added. If the Marines in the operating forces have a better understanding of the repair and maintenance process, they can create a more realistic expectation of the condition they should receive equipment from the supporting establishment.

The Marines wrapped up the visit with a brief and tour of FSD’s operations and facilities. This showcased the process FSD puts equipment through when going into or being taken out of long term storage.

“Oftentimes we don’t see our customers and we just push or receive equipment to or from them,” Field said. “It’s good for FSD to see who is on the other end of the cycle, and lets them directly educate the operating forces on what exactly it is they do and what it is they can expect when they receive equipment from FSD.”
