PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – As America observed Women’s Equality Day back in the U.S., the 3d Cavalry Regiment Soldiers honored female service members’ contributions to the Army at Forward Operating Base Lightning, Afghanistan Aug. 26, 2014.

U.S. Army Spec. Tabitha Lloyd, of Lynchburg, Va., read President Barack Obama’s proclamation. She also discussed a brief history of the female contribution to U.S. military efforts.

U.S. Army Maj. Adam Sawyer, the acting commander of 1st “Tiger” Squadron, 3d Cav. Regt, spoke about how the Army manages it’s talent, and how 78 percent of the jobs in the U.S. Army are currently open to both genders. She mentioned that the regimental staff was “nearly all female” when she showed up which is highly unusual for a Stryker Regiment.

Sawyer introduced U.S. Army Maj. Leah Kernan, 3d Cav. Regt.’s surgeon, and key note speaker during their observance. Kernan, of St. Louis, has been a member of the 3d Cav. Regt. for nearly two years. She has had an impressive carreer both enlisted, as an X-ray technician and now a registered nurse. She manages all the medical personnel attached to the 3d Cav. Regt and is a spokesperson for improving medical service provided within the regiment.

During her time as a Soldier, Kernan said she has never faced issues of sexism and that through hard work and goal setting got her to where she and others are today.

“I worked hard and was selected for my position as regimental surgeon primarily because of all the education and experience that I have gained,” said Kernan.

Kernan did address some of the unique problems that women face in the military.

“Sometimes kids just don’t understand why mom can’t stay home,” she said emotionally.

Her speech was concluded with these words, “If you have a goal, write it down, because that is the first step in making it real.”
