U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa

The United States Marine Corps is known as America’s force in readiness. The Marine Corps’ purpose is best expressed in our three commitments to the country: we make Marines, we win our nation’s battles and we develop quality citizens.
When trouble strikes, the Marines are called to quell the storm and restore order. Centuries of rigid training and obedience to orders have been passed down through generations, continuing Marine Corps’ values and tenacity. Senior Marines lead junior Marines, imparting knowledge and skills that could one day save the lives of Marines and Sailors and the lives of those they are sworn to defend.

Cpl. Dominick Commisso Jr., a Utica, N.Y., native and engineering quality control noncommissioned officer with Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Africa 14 is one such Marine.

“Cpl. Commisso takes the initiative to lead junior Marines and his peers to get the job done,” said Gunnery Sgt. Eric Brancheau, a Brownstown, Mich., native and maintenance chief with SP-MAGTF Africa. “He constantly seeks duties and responsibilities that are above his rank and experience and successfully accomplishes them. He is currently serving in a sergeant level billet as a squad leader.”

Prior to joining the Marine Corps, Commisso worked at a large retail chain for almost seven years, but he felt like he needed to do something bigger with his life.

“I think everyone should serve their country,” said Commisso. “My parents always taught me ‘If you’re going to do something you should always try to do it the best you can,’ and I knew that the Marine Corps was.”

Commisso said he wants to shape the next minds of the Marine Corps and get junior Marines to excel in life, not just as human beings, but as Marines and he hopes they try to develop the next generation [of Marines] into [even better] leaders.

When I deployed to Afghanistan I had a Staff NCO who took me under his wing, [he] guided me and got me to the level where I need to be and where I’m at now,” said Commisso. “I feel that I should pass on the knowledge and guidance that he gave me and mentor Marines.”

Commisso is very dedicated to his fellow Marines, as he makes himself available to them day and night. “He has established himself as the go to corporal for any junior Marine,” said Brancheau.

It’s not just about him, and we all can see that this is a prevalent part of his life. Molding Marines, ensuring mission success and developing quality citizens is how he shapes his daily activities.

“I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself and actually serve my country,” said Commisso.

Warrior of the Week was created to recognize the Marines and Sailors of SP-MAGTF Africa who play a significant role in the day to day operations that lead to mission success. Sometimes these accomplishments go under the radar, thus we try to capture the moments so that everyone else can appreciate their value.
