JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - Students around Washington made their way back to school Aug. 25, among them, Amidon-Bowen Elementary School.

Just under 300 students enrolled at Amidon-Bowen walked through the school’s gates Monday morning, greeted by Soldiers, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall staff, school faculty and Washington Nationals mascot, George, the racing President.

Since 2009, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall School Liasion Office, along with the southwest Washington Advisory Neighborhood Commission for Ward Six, has greeted students at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School.

The event started in 2009 when Bowen Elementary School merged with Amidon to make the transition easier on students.

“It is important to keep your energy up for the kids,” said the elementary school’s principal, Izabela Miller. “All of the returning students know when they come back for their first day that we give them a hug, and the new ones we welcome with big smiles.”

Two Soldiers from the Arlington U.S. Army recruiting center greeted students with a “good morning,” while handing them camouflage pencils to boost spirits for the upcoming school year.

Staff Sgt. Jeremy Kitt, a Washington native and recruiter from the Arlington Army recruiting center, attended Bowen Elementary School as a child. Kitt and his four older sisters attended Bowen Elementary School before it merged with what is currently Amidon-Bowen, he said.

“I was born in southwest [D.C.],” said Kitt. “My whole family went to that school, and I enjoy giving back to this community. It was really exciting to be there.”

Soldiers from JBM-HH’s Headquarters Command Battalion donated several dozen back packs stuffed with a variety of school supplies for the school’s students.

JBM-HH is partnered with Amidon-Bowen under Partnership in Education, a Department of Defense Education Activity program which pairs the individual armed services’ garrisons, installations and commands with regional schools to enhance students’ education.
