ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. - The 97th Air Mobility Wing recognized Aug. 26, 2014, as Women’s Equality Day.

“Women's Equality Day commemorates American women achieving full voting rights under the U.S. Constitution by the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920,” said Rachael Newby, 97th AMW Equal Opportunity director. “This historic event was the culmination of a massive civil rights movement that spanned several decades.”

In 1953, former President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act. The law was signed to eliminate discrimination against the pay women earn.

“We have by no means done enough to strengthen family life and at the same time encourage women to make their full contribution as citizens,” said Kennedy. “If our nation is to be successful in the critical period ahead, we must rely upon the skills and devotion of all our people.”

We have made many improvements in achieving equality through the years.

“From classrooms to boardrooms, in cities and towns across America, and in the ranks of our Armed Forces, women are succeeding like never before. Their contributions are growing our economy and advancing our nation,” said President Barack Obama in this year’s proclamation. “On Women's Equality Day, we continue the righteous work of building a society where women thrive, where every door is open to them, and their every dream can be realized.”

In observing this day, we honor not only the individuals who paved the way, but also how their actions have brought us to where we are today.

“Women’s Equality Day helps me reflect on opportunities I have as a woman, like being in the military and leading Airmen in making good decisions,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Louella Campbell, 97th Operations Support Squadron first sergeant, who has served for 18 years.

She hopes that one day gender will no longer play a major role in opportunities.

“I don’t want the focus to be on whether a person is a man or a woman,” said Campbell. “I want to focus on the ability and potential that person has.”
