FORT HOOD, Texas -- After several weeks of waking up late, spending the day swimming, or just hanging out with friends, going back to school can be difficult for students of any age. With this in mind, staff members at Bronco Youth Center hosted Back to School Bash Aug. 22.

“We do this annually at the end of the summer to get the kids ready for school and off on a good note,” said Kristine Fernandez, youth sports and fitness director for BYC.

The event began early with a talent and back-to-school fashion show, which featured the kids and some of the staff, said Fernandez. It was their way of expressing some ideas on what to wear this year.

As the festivities continued, Fort Hood youth viewed demonstrations from the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Zumba instructors and Skies Unlimited, which encouraged a healthy lifestyle, as well as, raised awareness of the various on-post activities students could do.

“I hope that they can see that fitness can be fun,” said Toni Kornegay, recreation specialist and fitness instructor for MWR and spouse of Sgt. 1st Class Calvin Kornegay, with 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. “I know a lot of the teenagers like to dance, Zumba is really upbeat.”

“It’s not just about going running or walking or lifting weights,” she continued. “You can get your cardio in a fun way that doesn’t feel like you’re working out.”

As the BYC kids enjoyed their day of fun, Army Community Services members passed out school supplies and shared vital information.

“We provide a wide range of safety tips and knowledge such as communicating with peers, bullying, and internet usage,” said Nadya Rodriquez, child safety specialist with Family Advocacy Program and spouse of Sgt. 1st Class Hector Rodriguez, a maintenance management supervisor with 144th Air Defense Artillery Battalion, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade.

“It is our hope that as the students have fun today, they receive what we have to share with them and become able to make good decisions,” said Rodriguez. With so many negative influences out in our society, there are also plenty of programs available for military families around Fort Hood.

“I would like for the kids to be able to move forward and take those skills that they maybe hiding and find the courage to dream,” Rodriguez added.

As the excitement moved outside for water slides, water balloon games, a dunk tank and a game truck, it was evident that the staff at the BYC and Fort Hood desired the best for its kids.

“The main thing we hope is that they’ll get that last hoorah for the summer, have back to school supplies in hand and be ready for school on Monday,” said Fernandez.
