FORT BLISS, Texas - The 528th Engineer Battalion, Louisiana Army National Guard, deployed July 22 from the Silas L. Copeland Arrival/Departure Air Control Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The unit consisted of Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the Forward Support Company, both of the 528th Eng. Bn.
Commanded by Lt. Col. Greg St. Romain, the 528th will conduct engineer and support operations in Kuwait under Area Support Group-Kuwait.
“As a unit, I want (Soldiers) to enhance their construction and engineering skills,” said St. Romain. “I want them to also establish personal goals, from education to physical fitness, and strive to achieve them.”
St. Romain expressed his gratitude to the families supporting the 528th. Good communication and networking with family members has proven to contribute to high morale for his unit.
“We want to let the families know that we are OK, and we are ready to get started,” said St. Romain.
One Soldier believes the 528th will convey a different culture to the mission and deployment. First Lt. Patrick Stephen, a military intelligence officer and HHC executive officer, thinks that the unit is very interactive and plans to look over the unit with the guidance of his company commander.
“I volunteered for this deployment,” said Stephen. “It is a different type of stress, but my goal is to take the experience and apply it to my own company that I will command someday.”
St. Romain said his unit is without a doubt in a better place than before thanks to the Directorate of Mobilization and Deployment. “They have been extremely accommodating,” he said.
