KILLEEN, Texas- Active and retired Soldiers from Fort Hood and members of the community participated in Operation Give to our Youth Annual back to School Drive, at the Transforming Life Fellowship Church, Aug. 16.

The event provided anyone with school-age children in the local area to have school supplies.

“It’s for those in need,” said Madison, Fla., native, Sgt. 1st Class Travis Mitchell, assigned to 44th Chemical Co., 2nd Chemical Battalion, 48th Chemical Brigade.

One Soldier taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the event was Pfc. Richard Edgell from 8th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team "Black,” 1st Cavalry Division.

“My wife heard about the event online and she recommended I take the kids out to get school supplies,” said Edgell. “It’s amazing what people do for the community.”

Retired Staff Sgt. Jamaica Mitchell and her husband coordinated the event to give back to the community.

“I’m here for everyone in need,” said Mitchell a Lincolnton, N.C., native. “I made the event for everyone in the community. I did this last year at Fort Hood and the event turned out great.”

Mitchell recalls how difficult it was for her when she had to buy school supplies for her children. She also said she plans to continue to give back to those in need because she loves helping people.

The Mitchells said they raised more than $600 with donations and added more funds from their pockets to get more school supplies.

“Next year I plan on having more school supplies and uniform,” said Mitchell. “We are running the event until the first day of school (Aug. 25).”

The event provided school supplies, clothes and shoes for more than 160 children. The church also has a clothing closet and is accepting donations.
