SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. - Installation 5Ks can be a common commodity on Air Force bases.

Each month, several organizations host these runs as a way to celebrate special remembrances, boost moral or improve the physical resilience of Airmen and families on the installation.

From Zombie 5Ks, in celebration of Halloween, to Women's History Month runs, Seymour Johnson has seen its fair share of these events. However, none of them have been as colorful as the one hosted by the 4th Force Support Squadron Aug 13, 2014.

For the first time, Seymour Johnson played host to a color run which it amply labeled, "The Color Me Fab 5K."

"We wanted to provide a unique, new event that would excite the people of Seymour Johnson and test the limits of their physical resilience," said Senior Airman Jessica Ferris, 4th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist and event organizer. "After conducting a random poll of the people in the fitness center, most kept encouraged us to hold a color run. We thought it was a wonderful idea."

Described as the "Happiest 5K on the Planet," the color run is the single largest event series in the nation and hosts an estimated 600,000 participants in various events throughout the country annually.

For this event, more than 350 Airmen and family members participated in the 3.1-mile run which started at the base fitness center. As runners ran the designated route, they passed through color stations which turned them into living, moving works of art.

According to Staff Sgt. Ashley Charles, 4th FSS fitness specialist and event volunteer, the run turned out to be a feel-good, happy and colorful event for all participants, no matter the fitness level.

"It was a fun event for everyone," Charles said. "It really seemed to help boost the morale of all the participants."

Ferris attributed the success of the event to those who selflessly dedicated their time organizing the event.

"This color run is a culmination of the hard work our volunteers and fitness staff put in," Ferris said. "Each of them dedicated hours of their own time to ensure the event happened without setbacks. They are the reason it was a huge success."
