    Story by Sgt. Stephanie Woodson

3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division

FORT BENNING, Ga. - Having four children ages nine months, 6, 9 and 11 years old, Sgt. Chad Daniel, a brigade operations sergeant assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, still finds time to volunteer.

Approximately 10 Soldiers assigned to 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and Operation Homefront Southeast passed out school supplies to more that 250 military families within the Fort Benning community Aug. 2, 2014, at the Holiday Inn on Manchester Expressway Columbus, Georgia.

“The average American spends more than $600 on school supplies,” said Kim Clagg, Operation Homefront community liaison. “School supplies and book bags have been collected nationwide by staff and volunteers to distribute to service members and their children.”

“Operation Homefront was thrilled to announce the return of their back to school event,” she added.

“I received an email about the event and thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the community and help children,” said Daniels.

This was Daniels first but not last time volunteering.

“It was a good turn-out and great experience,” said Daniels. “Now that I know about volunteering I can pass the information on to other Soldiers who want to volunteer.

Clagg said it’s enough having to adjust to new surroundings, schools and friends, and dealing with what is truly life and death stress every day their parent(s) are deployed. Yet in spite of these challenges, our military kids demonstrate remarkable resilience, strength of character, and academic excellence.

“It was a joy to see the children smiling and knowing we made a difference, Daniels said.
