JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The process of gaining the talents of 40 runners for the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Army Ten-Miler team is underway.

The second of three qualifying races took place July 18, and team organizer Todd Hopkins of the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation was impressed with some qualifying times and service member turnout during the first two qualifiers.

“I have a couple people whose times are just phenomenal,” Hopkins said. “They’ve run with us in the past years.”

According to Hopkins, at least 95 percent of the joint base ATM roster, which will be segmented into sub-teams, will be formed by runners qualifying in at least one of the three Fort Myer races. Others can earn a spot by running in a sanctioned race like the Marine Corps Historic Half in Fredericksburg.

A final Army Ten-Miler qualifier is scheduled Aug. 1 at 6:35 a.m. at the Fort Myer Fitness Center. Following the Aug. 1 race, Hopkins will compare times and offer race spots to the 65 to 75 people who attempted to qualify.

“We’ll go through the rosters and look for our best qualifiers to fill our 40 slots,” Hopkins said. “If everything goes according to plan that week of August 4, I’ll be sending out notices to the ones who’ve been awarded the slots.”

JBM-HH Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation is also encouraged about the ATM qualifier participation. Twenty four runners registered for the July 18 race and on the average, 15 to 25 servicemembers present themselves for qualification.

From the 40 slots, Hopkins will form a male master’s team (runners 40 and over), three active duty teams and possibly an all-female team and a mixed group of men and women. Twenty-six team divisions will compete for trophies and top times the morning of Oct. 12.

An open invitation and tryout is still available to all active-duty athletes. The Aug. 1 qualifier is the final opportunity males and females have to secure a ATM spot. Free registration is available the day of the race at the start/finish line at the Fort Myer Fitness Center or by visiting www.jbmhhmwr.com.

The 2014 Army Ten-Miler, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, will start Oct. 12. Close to 35,000 runners take part in the event, which is supported by 600 U.S. 3d Infantry (The Old Guard) volunteers.
