DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Fourteen Sailors from USS Carney (DDG 64) attended NASCAR’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway July 5, as part of the Armed Forces Foundation Troops to the Track Program.

Carney is sponsored by the Daytona Beach Navy League, which has maintained a close relationship with the crew for many years. They worked in cooperation with the foundation to arrange this day filled with VIP-level opportunities for the Sailors.

One of the first events included a meet-and-greet with the Monster Energy Crew and a surprise visit from Tommy "Tiny" Lister, who starred as Deebo in the 1995 movie "Friday." The Sailors received their own Monster Energy low-rider bicycle from the sponsors at the end of the event.

The Carney contingent also had an opportunity to meet Miss Coors Light and NASCAR drivers Ryan Truex, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Bush, and Jimmie Johnson. The group then toured pit row and the garage where the race cars were parked.

“I’m a big NASCAR fan,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Coy Dykes.

“It was a cool experience to go to the Coke Zero races with my command as a part of the Troops to the Track program,” said Dykes. “The entire experience was amazing. If you’re not first, you’re last!”

Carney is home-ported in Mayport and recently returned from a seven-and-a-half month deployment in the Arabian Gulf where the crew conducted ballistic missile defense and maritime security operations.

The destroyer is named for Robert Bostwick Carney, an admiral in the United States Navy who served as Chief of Naval Operations during the Eisenhower administration and held decorations from 12 foreign countries, many including their highest military recognition.
