FORT MCCOY, Wis. – U.S. Army Reserve paralegal students spent the last two days at the Paralegal Training Course building on and refreshing their basic soldier skills.
The students are broken down into four platoons and were placed into a rotational type of training where the platoons moved through different tasks that challenged not only their ability to accomplish the task as an individual, but to work together as a unit to complete the mission.
The first station was the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST 2000). This is used to work on the basics of marksmanship in a controlled environment. Cadre were able to identify issues with the four basic fundamentals of marksmanship: trigger squeeze, body position, sight picture and breathing.
The second station was the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer (RVTT). This system allowed the students to experience the different positions in a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), e.g. driver, truck commander and gunner.
The students were placed into scenarios that made them communicate and work together as a highly-coordinated convoy to accomplish their mission. During their missions, they encountered common convoy challenges; for example enemy contact, vehicle breakdowns and civilians on the battlefield, causing the crews to rely on the Rules of Engagement (ROE) to make the best tactical decisions.
“I’m looking forward to learning more about the tactical part of the Army,” said Pfc. Tylor Harper, Paralegal Specialist with the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Marysville, Wash.
“As a paralegal, we don’t really get to use a lot of our regular Army skills that we learned in basic training,” he mentioned.
At the same location, Soldiers that were waiting to utilize the RVTT and EST 2000 were kept motivated with room-clearing training, also know as glasshouse training, that helped the students better understand how to enter and clear rooms, hallways and how to communicate as a fire team to efficiently and thoroughly clear their target location.
The third and final station was the Dismounted Soldier Training System (DSTS). This virtual training tool allowed the students to interact with one another as a coordinated team, and be able to face any obstacle that the instructor wanted to introduce to them in a safe and controlled setting.
Students showed improvement in all stations and activities presented throughout the training. They will now transition from the virtual battlefield to a military occupational specialty (MOS) specific classroom setting where they will learn exactly what their job contains from experienced paralegal specialist cadre members.
