JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Recently, the Missouri Army National Guard’s Joint Forces Headquarters – Surface Maintenance Manager, based at the Ike Skelton Training Site, was selected by the chief of staff of the Army to receive the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence, or, AAME.

The Surface Maintenance Manager (SMM) was selected as the US Army’s winner in the ‘large’ category under the major Army command of National Guard Bureau. The SMM is the Missouri National Guard’s divisional office that supervises 270 federal technicians. The organization’s mission is to provide proactive and responsive maintenance support to the Missouri National Guard and customer units, leveraging them to best defend and serve the people of the United States of America.

“It is truly a privilege to be selected by the chief of staff of the Army to earn the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence,” said Lt. Col. Robert A. Geiser, state surface maintenance officer. “The Missouri National Guard has a proud tradition when it comes to AAME awards to uphold.”

Geiser noted that that in 2012 that Field Maintenance Shop 3 Cape Girardeau earned top honors in the AAME. Several Missouri National Guard units have earned AAME awards in recent years to include: Forward Support Company, 1140th Engineer Battalion, of Cape Girardeau; 1221st Transportation Company, of Dexter; and 1035th Support Maintenance Company, of St. Louis.

The Surface Maintenance Manager Divisional Office supervises the maintenance activities of the Missouri Army National Guard throughout the state. Those maintenance locations include the Combined Support Maintenance Shops in Jefferson City, as well as field maintenance shops located at Raytown, Festus, Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Rolla, St. Joseph, Marshall, Mexico, Macon, Bridgeton, Springfield, Harrisonville, Neosho, Trenton, and Nevada.

The AAME was established in 1982 by the Department of the Army to recognize exceptional accomplishment in Maintenance and provide added incentive to the competitive programs of major Army commands. Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve units compete separately. The competition in each component is divided into three categories: small, medium and large, based on number of authorized personnel.
