RICEBORO, Ga. – Soldiers with 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, showed the support of the division at the 16th Annual Back to School Rally at the Riceboro Youth Center in Riceboro, Georgia, July 12.

“I feel that it’s very important that the military be visible here,” said Lavonia LeCounte, founder and executive director of the Riceboro Back to School Rally, and native of Midway, Georgia. “It shows that you support us not only during the war, but you’re fighting right here to support our children.”

Lt. Col. Scott Sentell, commander of 6-8 Cav, 4th IBCT, was one of the guest speakers at the rally, which passes out school supplies for children around Liberty County.

“We enjoy being a part of this great community and today’s event is just another tremendous example of the hard work and dedication of so many outstanding people,” Sentell said in his address.

One member from each troop of 6-8 Cav. served on the color guard detail and a group from Troop C volunteered to assist in passing out supplies where they were needed.

The yearly event has many sponsors and featured 23 booths, food vendors and even an ice cream truck. Several speakers started the event with words of guidance and encouragement. To complete the event there was an entertainment portion with demonstrations from a local martial arts school and several after school clubs providing parents and students with information on their programs to keep kids engaged. All of this is organized by LeCounte who says working with youth is her calling.

The event originally was slated to be outdoors at Briar Bay Park but heavy rains the morning of the event forced a move. LeCounte said she made calls that morning to secure the Riceboro Youth Center.

“As parents and teachers, and as leaders, it is imperative that we encourage our students to stay the course, to achieve their goals and not to give up just because it seems hard sometimes,” said Sentell.

“Every one of us plays a significant role in developing our next generation of leaders,” said Sentell, adding, “Their potential for success is immeasurable.”
