    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The companies of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 went head-to-head in a series of physical tests competing for the Workhorse trophy here June 27.

The competition consisted of a dodge ball game, ammo can lifts, dizzy-izzy and combat carry. The Marines also participated in various other games that tested their ability to work together to accomplish a common goal.

“Hosting these types of events increases esprit de corps and camaraderie within the squadron,” said 1st Lt. Patrick E. Callahan, the Headquarters and Service Company commander with MWSS-271. “This is a time for the Marines to let down their hair and have some fun and enjoy a little competition.”

The Marines participate in field meets annually and host squadron functions monthly.

Marines with the support squadron provide all essential aviation ground support requirements for Marine Aircraft Group 14 and all supporting or attached elements.

“The event is also a way for senior leadership to show the Marines a little appreciation for the hard work they consistently put in,” said Callahan.

Senior Marines within the squadron hope that the event will recharge the Marines and get them pumped up for squadron exercises and operations that they are scheduled to support in the near future.

Corporal Aderinola H. Osifeso, a radio operator with MWSS-271 and the event’s assistant coordinator, felt as though the event rejuvenated the Marines morale.

“It gives the junior Marines a chance to see their staff and leadership in action,” said Osifeso. “The event also encourages positive relationships within the squadron that not only improves our success by strengthening unit cohesion, but it makes us a better family.”

As in any competition, there is always one winner.

Headquarters and Service Company won the Workhorse trophy by earning 58 points in the games.

“The Marines worked hard and it was a great game,” said Callahan. “My first day as the company commander and the Marines brought the trophy home.”
