COLUMBUS, Ohio — The opening ceremony for the 2014 National Rifle and Pistol Matches will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7 at Camp Perry Joint Training Center, 1000 Lawrence Road, Port Clinton, Ohio.

The National Matches are hosted jointly each year by the National Rifle Association, Civilian Marksmanship Program and the Ohio National Guard.

Known as the “World Series of competitive shooting,” the five-week event brings more than 6,000 national and international civilian and military competitors, volunteers, spectators, vendors and family members to Camp Perry Joint Training Center (CPJTC) each summer.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Friends of Camp Perry Memorial Plaza, where Gary Anderson, director emeritus of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, will provide opening remarks and officially kick off the 2014 National Matches by firing the ceremonial “first shot.”

Anderson was the first to record a 200 during the High Power Rifle Competition in 1971, a record which has stood alone until it was tied in 2011.

The First Shot Ceremony and CPJTC are open to the public. In addition to world-class shooting ranges, CPJTC offers public beaches, newly-constructed cottages and a state-of-the-art conference center.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) cordially invites the media and public to attend a dedication ceremony for the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center immediately following the opening ceremony.
