KADENA AIR BASE, Japan - Kadena kicked off AmericaFest 2014 here today, shutting down one of the flightline's two runways to allow military community members an opportunity to enjoy food, music and fun before the event is opened to the public June 29.

The free, two-day event is intended to build a positive relationship between U.S. military forces on Okinawa and the local population in a fun and informal environment, while offering a first-hand look at a traditional Fourth of July celebration.

Although only open to Status of Forces Agreement status members today, the base will open its gates June 29 to invite local citizens to partake in the festivities.

The event includes food vendors, games, static aircraft displays, a kiddie land for children and performances from, among others, the Firebirds Taiko Drum Club, Capitol Movement Dance Company and American rock group 3 Doors Down.

"I know a lot of (local citizens) are curious about what's going on on base," said Senior Airman Patrick Shappley, 18th Communication Squadron cable and antenna maintenance technician. "A lot of people are going to enjoy seeing the flightline and seeing the helicopters and the planes."

"We're the guests here," Shappley said. "It's their country, and it's important to show them we do care about them too, we're not just here for our priorities."

AmericaFest is scheduled to run from June 28 to 29.
