LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder is scheduled to sign House bill 5451, July 1, at 9:30 a.m., in front of the Michigan National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in Lansing.
In February 2014, Snyder proposed tuition assistance for military personnel in the fiscal year 2015 budget. House bill 5451 provides yearly tuition assistance for Michigan National Guard members in good status and received unanimous endorsement from the Michigan Senate and the House of Representatives earlier this month before being sent to Snyder for signature.
“Tuition assistance is a tremendous tool for our team and will assist in our efforts to recruit and retain the best and brightest Soldiers and Airmen,” said Maj. Gen. Gregory Vadnais, the adjutant general of the Michigan National Guard and director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. “For the Michigan National Guard, this boils down to readiness.”
Michigan colleges and technical schools will also benefit from the bill since it only subsidizes tuition paid to Michigan-based colleges, universities, technical and vocational schools.
State Rep. Bruce Rendon, the bill’s primary sponsor, is also scheduled to be at the Michigan National Guard headquarters for the signing.
The signing ceremony is scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 1, at 9:30 a.m., at the Michigan National Guard, Joint Force Headquarters, 3411 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., Lansing, MI 48906, with a short reception following. For more information, please contact the Michigan National Guard Public Affairs Office at 517-481-8141.
