CAMP LEJUENE, N.C. - Marines with Bravo Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., attended a Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity home dedication ceremony for the Brimmer-George family in Newport, N.C., June 26.
After nearly eight months of work preparing the family’s new house, the Marines were happy to finally turn over the keys to the home’s owners.
Approximately 40 service members put up siding, painted and poured concrete to help build the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home that also included a den and suite. This house also marked Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity’s 90th home dedication.
“With our job as combat engineers, it just makes sense that we would help with something like this,” said Cpl. Dennis M. Creel Jr., a combat engineer with the unit. “If I can help somebody by putting my skills to work, then why not?”
Because Habitat for Humanity has no paid construction staff and relies solely on volunteers and donations from the community, the local group was glad to have the Marines help.
“In this economy, it’s hard for people to donate money, but there are other ways for people to help us,” said Kris L. Durham, executive director of Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity. “Some of the Marines have a lot of knowledge, and we’re thankful for their help.”
The family of six received the keys to the home after taking home ownership and budget classes and putting in 400 hours of work to help build the house.
“I’ve always wanted a house but never in a million years saw how that could be possible,” said Dianne Brimmer-George, the new homeowner. “Now I’m holding the keys to my house … I am simply grateful.”
Living in the home with Dianne will be her husband, Gerald George, her son and daughter, Devin and JaTaya Brimmer, her sister Johnise Brimmer and her mother, Reba Brimmer. In a letter, Devin wrote that he and his sister are excited to each have their own room and a home he can be proud to invite family and friends to visit.
“Not everyone gets a chance to help by doing a job they love, nothing can beat that,” said Pfc. Merrick W. Lawrence, a Marine with the unit. “To see the family smiling puts a smile on my face.”
