MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marine Corps Community Services hosted the National Technical and Vocational Career Hiring Expo to provide attendees the opportunity to seek local employers and educational information at Marston Pavilion aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, June 19.

“There are about 300 service members separating every week and the numbers continue to grow,” said Lee Tuthill, transitions specialist with MCCS. “They are all looking for jobs and education throughout the U.S., and we gather agencies in and out of the area to provide education information and offer jobs on the spot.”

Approximately 60 organizations attended the expo to provide services and information to more than 500 job seekers.

“I got the opportunity see what automotive technician jobs are locally available,” said Cpl. Robert L. Collins, an automotive diesel technician with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion. “I got to hand out resumes, meet the employers face to face and apply for several jobs. I’ve got four interviews so far, and I’m looking forward to them.”

The expo benefits service members by helping them apply for jobs before leaving the armed services.

“Veterans get to connect with different employers and gain the experience of networking at the expo,” said Gerardo Cruz, veterans employment services supervisor with North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The expo hosted a variety of companies to include equipment, construction and transportation companies, police departments from across the nation, various technical colleges and a resume writing service.

“I enjoy the atmosphere of the expo,” said Collins. “Everyone is open and willing to talk to you about employment opportunities.”
MCCS hosts four career hiring expos per year. Two of the expos host a wide variety of career fields and the other two are vocationally and technically oriented.

The next expo is slated for Sept. 24 at the Goettge Memorial Field House. Those planning to attend should bring copies of their resume.
