DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. - It may be early in the season to think about playoffs, but the 436th Security Forces Squadron is steam rolling towards that goal with a championship title in mind after failing to make it to the big game last year.

In a slugfest match, the 436th SFS defeated the 436th Aerial Port Squadron 11-8 in an American League intramural softball game June 18, 2014, at the softball field on Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.

The victory pushes the 436th SFS record to 3-1 on the season while the 436th APS fell to 1-3 on the season.

John Vanderven, 436th SFS coach, said there is a special history between the 436th SFS and 436th APS that dates way back and he was not surprised about how the game was battled out.

“It was a hard fought game from beginning to finish,” said Vanderven. “You can tell it is early in the season because there is a lot of rust, but I’m confident in our team’s ability.”

The 436th SFS grabbed a quick lead with three runs in the first inning with two singles and two doubles and held the 436th APS to only one hit with no runs.

Then the slug fest started between the two teams. The teams would be tied at the end of the second inning 3-3 and at the end of the third inning 5-5. The fourth inning proved to be a hitting frenzy with the 436th SFS batting four singles and two doubles and the 436th APS batting five singles and one triple, making the score at the end of the fourth, 9-8 with the 436th SFS leading.

Donnie Maas, 436thSFS left fielder, hit 5-for-5, all singles, on the night and ran in for two scores. Maas said batting and stringing hits together was pivotal for their success during the game.

“The 436th APS team is definitely a tough team and gave us a run for our money,” said Maas. “This is my second year playing against APS and I think we performed well again against one of our tougher competitors and ultimately got the result we wanted.”

The 436th SFS stretched their lead to 11-8 in the top of the sixth with three singles and a double. They would ultimately shut down any hope of a comeback by the 436th APS with a 3-up, 3-down to finish the game.

Kyle Heathington, 436th APS player-coach, said he was proud of the way his team performed and thought a few more base hits could have changed the outcome of the game.

“We played a really good game tonight but they just played a better game,” said Heathington. “We are going to keep doing what we’re doing and with a few more practices we will be where we want to be.”

It was undoubtedly a hard fought game between the two heavy hitters and Vanderven said you can’t ask for a better game between two teams.

“We stayed true to form as a team this game, and that is our motto this year, teamwork,” said Vanderven. “I look forward to our next game against APS.”

The two teams meet again just two weeks before the playoffs begin on July 14, 2014 at 8:30 p.m.
