CAMP PORSANGMOEN, Norway - On Tuesday, 100 Minnesota National Guardsmen loaded a plane at the 133rd Airlift Wing departing for the 41st U.S./Norway Reciprocal Troop Exchange.

For the first time since 1974, the Minnesotans traveled to the northern-most NATO base of Camp Porsangmoen, Norway, to participate in a summer reciprocal troop exchange.

The Minnesota contingent flew from Minneapolis to Pease Air Force Base, New Hampshire. While in New Hampshire, the Minnesota Guardsmen received a “Hero’s Welcome” they will never forget.

While the plane refueled in the Garden State, the Minnesota Soldiers and Airmen deplaned to stretch and get some fresh air. As the Norwegian Exchange participants walked through the Pease Air Force Base, they were greeted by more than 300 “Pease Greeters.”

It was a hero’s welcome the Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will never forget.

“I was humbly surprised and grateful for the huge crowd that welcomed and greeted us as we walked down the concourse," said Army Sgt. Maj. Darin Mjoen, 41st U.S./Norway Reciprocal Troop Exchange sergeant major.

“It felt as if the receiving line was never-ending and the cheers and clapping echoed throughout the halls of the terminal," said Army Maj. Aaron Krenz, 41st U.S./Norway Reciprocal Troop Exchange commander.

Following the stop in New Hampshire, the Minnesota contingent flew on to Iceland and then to their final destination of Camp Porsangmoen.

While in Norway, the Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will train alongside the Norwegian army sharing military tactics, techniques and procedures. The Minnesota Guardsman will take part in a cultural experience that will challenge them in many new ways.
