FORT JACKSON, S.C. - Recruiting Station Columbia said farewell to Maj. Derek C. Nielsen and welcomed Maj. Charles C. Nash in a change of command and retirement ceremony at Fort Jackson Army base on Friday.

Nielsen retired from the Marine Corps after relinquishing command to Nash, he was thankful for the opportunity to command.

“It has been a challenge and fun at the same time,” said Nielsen.

Col. William J. Bowers, commanding officer, 6th Marine Corps District attended the ceremony and had a few things to say about the recruiting station and the incoming and outgoing commanding officers.

“As you look at the ceremony, the discipline of the Marines is typical for the way that RS Columbia has performed everything under Nielsen’s leadership,” said Bowers. “Everything this command does, they do in excellence. This is a first rate command in every way.”

Last year the recruiting station produced the best staff non-commissioned officer and the best officer selection officer, said Bowers. We know those things don’t happen without great leadership and team work.

“[Nash] we look forward to working with you,” said Bowers. “We know you are going to continue to lead these Marines in success.”

Nash had heard about the stations success, even before coming to it.

“[Marines] your repetition precedes you,” said Nash. “I look forward to not losing any momentum in the following days and continuing the great success. I look forward to becoming a part of this team and serving alongside you.”
