ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England – Cars break down often around Royal Air Force Lakenheath, and while a lot of repairs can be done at the local hobby shop, government-owned vehicles need help the vehicle maintenance Airmen of the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron can provide.

The personnel assigned to the 48th LRS vehicle maintenance shop accept and process all scheduled and unscheduled GOV repairs on RAF Lakenheath.

“From transmission to seat belts, we work on every point of a vehicle,” Said Tech. Sgt. Lee Samson, 48th LRS vehicle maintenance craftsman.

All GOVs must go through an in-quality check, which addresses problems provided by the customer, and an out-quality check, to ensure that everything has been taken care of and meets requirements.

“If there’s anything wrong with your vehicle, we’re here to fix it,” said Airman 1st Class Robert Davis, 48th LRS vehicle maintenance apprentice. “Our main focus is to safely get vehicles to peak quality and 100 percent ready to support the mission.”

The vehicle maintenance shop is divided into multiple sections, all specializing in specific forms of automobile repair from minor upkeep such as oil and tire changes in the minor maintenance section, to welding and fabrication in the allied body shop section.

“We work in a very uptempo shop, so having us divided into specific areas makes it easier to provide a quick turnaround for vehicles staying here or going downrange,” Samson said.

The base vehicle fleet ranges from on-base function support, such as fire trucks and forklifts, to those used in deployed environments, such as humvees.

Personnel of the 48th LRS vehicle maintenance shop must always be ready to take on any challenge because RAF Lakenheath is such an active base. Home to four flying squadrons with demanding operations, and nearly 100 deploying aircraft in the past year, vehicles repaired by the shop are key components in completing the mission.

“There’s never a dull day here in our shop,” Davis said. “As vehicles advance, we advance.”
