GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Spc. Jacob Furman, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, helps Alexis Marrero, 8, into the passenger seat of a Humvee in Camp Aachen, March 7.

The 44th ESB invited the Grafenwoehr Elementary School students to spend the morning in the training area to experience a day in the life of a Soldier.

During their field trip, the second- and third- and fifth-graders learned to march, give orders, sight weapons and donned gas masks. They conducted radio checks, sat in Humvees, hung out in a Joint Network Node Shelter and visited the "TOC"or tactical operations center of the training area.

During the question and answer portion of the day, students grilled the Soldiers.

Inquiries ranged from basics like the rank system and the unit's mission during deployment, to more technical questions about where supplies come from and how much 1,000 pounds of titanium costs.

"The students know they're part of the Army community," said Angie Hood, reading and math teacher at GES, "but this gives them an idea of what that is. So when their dad says he's going into the field, they know what that means."
