SAN ANTONIO, Texas - For the 32nd consecutive year, Soldiers of the Texas Army National Guard are participating in the Fiesta San Antonio celebration.

The Texas Army National Guard established the Texas Guard Fiesta event in 1982 to enhance the working relationship between the diverse Army Guard units in the San Antonio area and serve as a public relations event between the military and civilian community of San Antonio.

"I've been attending the Texas Guard Fiesta since 1984. The San Antonio Fiesta is such a big event in this town it's important that we [Texas National Guard] take part in it," Escalante said. "Over the years there has been consistent turnout. We draw civilians wanting to know more about our organization, but also a lot of retirees come back and a lot of new soldiers bring their families."

Established in 1891, Fiesta San Antonio was organized to honor the heroes from the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. In 1959 a Fiesta San Antonio Commission, made up of community leaders, was established to plan and coordinate activities for the festival. Today more than three million partygoers attend the celebration consisting of parades and other activities.

The Texas Guard Fiesta is an approved event by the San Antonio Fiesta Commission.

"Being sanctioned by the San Antonio Fiesta Commission is very important to us," Escalante said. "The commission's job is to attend our event and validate that our booths and activities are family friendly and will represent the ceremony in a positive manner."

Texas National Guard units represented were: Headquarters, 111th Multifunctional Medical Battalion; Bravo Battery, 4th, 133rd Field Artillery; San Antonio Army Aviation Support Facility; 236th Signal Company, 1st Detachment, 112th Combat Service Support, and 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment.

This is the first year Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment participated in Fiesta San Antonio.

"Fiesta started as a way to honor those that fought in the battle of San Jacinto. Well, our unit actually fought in that battle," said. Capt. Jose Perez, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regimen. "We decided to have a booth this year to get the word out about our unit and let the community know that we are always here to serve them and keep our community safe."

Texas Guard Fiesta is held each year in the parking lot of the San Antonio Texas National Guard Armory. Units set up booths and sell food, here, to raise money for the unit Family Readiness fund. Units also assist in setting up carnival rides and games for children including a rock wall and a giant slide.

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that plans, promotes, and coordinates Fiesta San Antonio through support of its participating member organizations in presenting a safe and educational, annual celebration.
