ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — Col. Justin Hirniak, commander of the Defense Contract Management Agency-Chicago; hosted the 85th Support Command’s 106th Army Reserve birthday celebration, at the unit headquarters, in Arlington Heights, Ill. – 25 miles northwest of Chicago - April 23.

Hirniak, an active-duty soldier that shares the building with the 85th Spt. Cmd., commented on the changes of the Army Reserve in the past few decades and their value within the communities.

“If you look how the [Army] Reserve has changed as an integral component of the U.S. Army, it really shifted their relevancy around 30 years ago to a Total Force [Policy] concept. The 217,000, plus or minus, members of the Army Reserve have really taken on that key role and responsibility,” said Hirniak. “In 2000, the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. [Eric] Shinseki, conducted a big push to get active duty army officers and senior noncommissioned officers out into the communities and tell that army story in how we serve. If you take a look at who does that every day, it is the Army Reserve, because they are integrated within the local communities. [They] are the forefront in the first phase of representation between the American nation, the American citizen, and the U.S. Army.”

The birthday celebration event began with a reenlistment ceremony for Staff Sgt. James Pangrazio, Army Reserve Careers Division Sergeant, administered by Chief Warrant Officer 3 Danyel Thompson, human resources technician.

The history of the Army Reserve was narrated by Master Sgt. Gilbert Garrett, secretary to the general staff; discussing the roots of the Army Reserve and the symbol of the Army Reserve crest depicting the image of Capt. John Parker, (famous for commanding the Lexington Militia at the opening shots of the American Revolution at the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775).

The symbol became the official Army Reserve symbol July 8, 1922, in a War Department memorandum.

A cake cutting ceremony was conducted by Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Greene, command sergeant major of the 85th Support Command and senior soldier, Pfc. Yvette Leon, human resources specialist and most junior soldier, Hirniak, and Pangrazio.

“Continue on with your professionalism,” said Hirniak. “Not only serving in the capacity that you do and your mission requirements, but also in serving your fellow Americans out there that really don’t understand what we do in uniform on a day-to-day basis.”
