SOUTHWEST ASIA — Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations Oct. 4, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials.
In Afghanistan, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II dropped a Guided Bomb Unit-12 onto an enemy structure in Bermal. The Joint Terminal Attack Controller confirmed the strike hit the intended target with the desired result achieved.
Two Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles near Kajaki Dam fired cannon rounds into a tree line from which enemy personnel were firing. The JTAC confirmed that enemy firing ceased after the strafe passes.
An F-15E dropped GBU-38s onto an enemy rocket site in Shkin. The mission was declared successful by the JTAC.
An A-10 bombed the cave entrance of a cave sheltering the enemy with a GBU-12 in Bari Kowt. The JTAC confirmed that the cave entrance was destroyed.
During the same engagement, an F-15 struck another cave entrance in Bari Kowt with a GBU-31. The mission was deemed successful by the JTAC.
An A-10 in Bari Kowt performed a show of force to deter any attacks while performing an armed overwatch for a convoy. Enemy actions were deterred and the show of force was deemed a success by the JTAC.
In Korengal, A-10s dropped general-purpose 500-pound bombs and fired cannon rounds at anti-coalition militia in contact with coalition forces. The JTAC reported the munitions hit their targets and achieved the desired result.
One of the pilots conducted a show of force with flares to deter further enemy activity. The JTAC confirmed the show of force had the desired result.
In Asadabad, A-10s targeted enemies on a ridgeline with GBU-12s. The JTAC confirmed all munitions successfully hit their targets.
An F-15E conducted a show of force with flares over Ghazni to halt enemies engaged with coalition forces. The JTAC reported the show of force as successful.
Enemy activity in Orgun-E was deterred by F-15Es conducting shows of force. The JTAC confirmed the results.
In Kandahar, A-10s conducted shows of force with flares in the vicinity of coalition forces. The JTAC reported the desired effect was achieved.
An F-15E, over Gereshk preformed a show of force to deter enemy activity. The JTAC confirmed the show of force was successful.
In total, 41 close air support missions were flown in support of the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Ten Air Force and Royal Air Force Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.
In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon used a GBU-38 to strike an explosive laden house in Baghdad. The strike was reported as successful and the target was destroyed.
An F-16 in Muqdadiyah conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity in the vicinity of coalition counter improvised explosive device operations.
One of the pilots performed a show of force to deter enemy personnel from firing on coalition forces. Enemy actions were deterred.
An F-16 performed an air strike on an enemy structure containing an IED in Baghdad with a GBU-38. The JTAC confirmed that the strike was successful.
In Baqubah, F-16s conducted shows of force to deter suspicious individuals from violent activities in the vicinity of a suspected enemy vehicle.
In total, coalition aircraft flew 49 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions supported coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
Twenty Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.
U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.
Approximately 138 airlift sorties were flown; 489 tons of cargo were delivered, and 2,920 passengers were transported.
Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq and Japan flew in support of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
On Oct. 3, U.S. Air Force, French and Royal Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 50 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.1 million pounds of fuel to 263 receiving aircraft.
