DAEGU, South Korea – The 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command Soldiers, Families and Civilians attended the Habitat for Humanity volunteer program April 12 in Daegu.

The 19th ESC Volunteers participate in H4H through the unit’s Good Neighbor community outreach program. Team 19 has just recently started volunteering in support of Daegu city’s goal of repairing 1,000 homes for low income families.

During an early, rainy Saturday morning, volunteers were eager to get to work. They visited one of the old houses in Sincheon 4 Dong, near Dongdaegu Station and started replacing old wallpaper and removing trash from the house.

Pvt. Kristi K. Hardney, administrative aide, 19th ESC, said she was happy to volunteer her time making repairs to the house, rather than spending her time taking a rest in the barracks.

Kim Sugn-hwan, the owner of the house, couldn’t help expressing his appreciation for their efforts to repair his home.

“They might suffer some hardship when they conduct their missions to protect our country; however, they worked very hard and delightfully without any tiresome expressions and I really appreciate their help.” said Kim.

The purpose of the Good Neighbor Program is to help U.S. Soldiers to learn Korean lifestyle and culture and to foster good friendships between U.S. Soldiers and Korean participants. There are a lot of events put on by the Good Neighbor Program, such as traveling famous spots in Korea, meeting Korean good neighbors and attending community events.

“It is very meaningful to volunteer and give back our contributions to the community for a better U.S and South Korean alliance.

Contribution to our local community is as important as protecting South Korea and U.S. from our enemies.” said Master Sgt. Robert Ducksworth, noncommissioned officer in charge of G9, civil affairs, 19th ESC.

Although Daegu is one of the major cities in South Korea, there are still a lot of people who are in need. The 19th ESC’s Good Neighbor Program is dedicated to the local community and will be there to assist in community projects and strengthen relationships.
