BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), who are currently in charge of Regional Command-East, will host what will be the last official Boston Marathon Shadow Run as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, April 18.
Service members and civilians are among the 600 deployed to Afghanistan to run the Boston Shadow Marathon. The number was limited to the first 600 people who signed up.
According to the Boston Athletic Association website, since 2005, thousands of U.S. armed forces personnel stationed overseas have participated in “shadow” versions of the Boston Marathon, running the marathon distance on, or near, Patriots’ Day, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, or on a ship at sea. Lt. Col. Rodney Freeman founded a shadow version of the Boston Marathon, held for armed forces personnel stationed overseas, while deployed to Iraq.
The BAA has provided Boston Marathon start and finish banners, bibs, tee shirts, medals, and finisher certificates for participants in these shadow marathons.
